Flora Duffy Makes History

Flora Duffy and Mom

July 26h, Ms Flora Duffy became the world’s best female triathlete with her first-place finish in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Her accomplishment is astounding considering a few historical facts:

1896 - The first modern Olympics was held in Athens, Greece.

2000 - The Olympics introduced the Triathlon; since then, Australia, Switzerland, the USA and Great Britain have dominated medal performances.

2021 - Flora Duffy beat Great Britain (Georgia Taylor-Brown) and the United States of America (Georgia Taylor-Brown) and gave Bermuda the new title of the smallest country in the world to hold a gold medal.

Although Flora made winning look easy, her rise to be the world’s best took significant work, sacrifice and dedication.

The Corporation of St George are elated Flora accomplished her goal.  She is a global inspiration to anyone with a dream.

Mayor Gives Moving Speech at Twinning

LymeRegisStGeorgeSomerStatue

A small delegation of representatives attended the Sir George Somers Day parade in Dorset, Lime Regis, the birthplace of the Town's namesake.

Mayor Dowling, Town Manager Foggo and Crier Ed Christoper left Bermuda and made the long trip to the small town. The trip would be the first since the pandemic began. The delegation followed the stringent public health guidelines of Bermuda and England.

Since 1997, Bermuda began sharing a direct link with the Lyme Regis through a Twinning arrangement. Few know Sir George Somers was also the Mayor of Lyme Regis. By the way, it is only a coincidence the new hotel is St Regis.

LymeOneline reports the celebration was scaled back. The ceremony normally consists of a Town parade, presentation of colours (flag) followed by festivities that include a lunch and church service at Whitchurch Canonicorum, the hometown of Mayor Somers. A socially distanced event to place with big screens allowed the Mayors of Lyme Regis and St. George's to make speeches.

West Dorset MP Chris Loder published in his monthly column that Mayor Dowling's speech was moving; and highlighted from his speech: "how important it is that we learn from our history and to be aways in the pursuit of truth, rather than what we were first told."
