Special Message From The Town Manager

Gratitude in the Aftermath.

Bermuda was fortunate. After enduring two hurricanes in quick succession, our island emerged largely unscathed. While 17,000 residents experienced power outages, for most it was a temporary inconvenience — one that might have been even shorter with better preparation.

It’s easy to forget that the speed with which power is restored in Bermuda is exceptional. In many other places, communities wait days or even weeks for service to return. The higher cost of our electricity helps ensure that this isn’t our reality — it supports the extensive training of BELCO’s local teams, the maintenance of restoration equipment and standby gear, and the fuel reserves kept on island for emergencies.

We extend our sincere thanks to BELCO and everyone who worked tirelessly to bring power back to our homes and businesses so quickly. Your dedication keeps Bermuda resilient.

BIG HOLIDAY FUN ALERT! Our teams are out on the road and around the town preparing for the holidays. We thank everyone for their patience while our staff is up in the highlift. And a special thank you to Somers Supermart and Ms. Tucker for granting our team permission to connect lights to your buildings to extend the light to the Somers Gardens.

Look Up

Look up to discover what's unique, changing, and what's ahead.

“Looking up" generally requires you to look above your normal sightline to see something different or unique. Looking up takes your sight off what is straight ahead and has you thinking about something new, inspiring, or even scary.

The beauty of looking up allows you to see tall trees, birds nesting, and the expansive sky, where clouds present an array of styles—some playful and whimsical, or dark and threatening—with each visual changing your emotion.

Few notice, when they look up, that not every building in St. George's has a white limestone roof with lines to catch water. There are some rare buildings that have flat roofs, like the State House, and there is one that has a curved roofline that you will never appreciate if you don’t look up.

A curved roofline is unique and brave. It does exemplify that what we think is very common is not always the case.

This season and in the year ahead, what else might we discover if we simply look up? The star on the Christmas tree, Santa overhead bringing gifts for all the boys and girls or the onion ready to drop signaling we are at the top of a new year that can bring joy, love, peace for every St. George resident.

Just looking… up!

Corporation of St. George's Supports Purple Thursday

There is help in our community when you need it.

Raising awareness of domestic abuse is important to our community. The Corporation of St. George's stands with the Centre Against Abuse and the Women's Resource Centre in their efforts to raise awareness of this critical social matter.

To show our support, we lit the Towne Hall building in purple—the signature color of the domestic abuse awareness campaign. Mayor Quinell Francis, JP, stated: "The Corporation of St. George's stands in solidarity with all who suffer in silence. The purple lights on the Towne Hall building shone as a beacon of hope, support, and awareness—reminding our community that no one should face domestic violence alone."

In public statements, Tammy Richardson-Augustus noted that the event has evolved from a symbolic tribute to a significant national movement that aims to 'break through the silence' and inspire systemic reform. Along with the Corporation of St. George's, the Cabinet Office, Hamilton Police Station, and City Hall demonstrated their national support by participating in this initiative

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester Visited Bermuda

In a momentous occasion, Her Royal Highness shared in the celebration.

The Duchess of Gloucester, Birgitte, who serves as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Bermuda Regiment (RBR), visited Bermuda from Thursday, 16 October to Monday, 20 October 2025 to lead the Regiment’s 60th-anniversary celebrations. Upon arrival on Thursday, she was welcomed by the Governor, Andrew Murdoch, and met with key dignitaries including the Premier and the Chief Justice. Over the four-day visit, she carried out a full programme of cultural, educational, and regimental engagements: on Friday, 17 October, she visited the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy, and the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art; on Saturday, 18 October, she attended the RBR Trooping the Colour ceremony and the regimental gala dinner; on Sunday, 19 October, she joined a church service at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Hamilton and visited Warwick Camp; and on Monday, 20 October, she concluded her visit with a tree-planting ceremony at Government House and a tour of the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) before departing.

Scoop The Poop

Dogs seek owners help in poop clean up.

Dogs are adorable, but their poop is not. In our Town, maintaining a pristine appearance is crucial, and people remember cleanliness. Regrettably, we must address instances of carelessness.

While we love strolling with our canine companions, we do not enjoy having our staff clean up after them or guests being subjected to the smoosh of the odour-carrying clumps that leave a dreadful impression. We kindly request all dog owners to keep their pets on their leash and to be responsible and pick up after their pets when walking along Water Street, Ordnance Island, and King’s Square.

We had to implement a ban on dogs in our gardens, and we hope to avoid extending that ban to other public walking areas in the town.

Remembrance Day

Lest We Forget.

As we get further and further away from when the world was in the unrest of war, we become busy with life and believe that peace and calm will be our destiny—lest we forget. Our remembrance is not only for the soldiers and the families that sacrificed everything; it is a point in our annual calendar to be solemnly reminded of the cost of peace. The Royal Bermuda Regiment is celebrating 60 years, and every Bermudian who stood tall and proud is part of a legacy of pride and respect to our forefathers who fought for that peace. And what sometimes goes unnoticed is that the current generation, when they parade in respect for lost soldiers, serves as our affirmation of peace..

UNESCO | SPOTLIGHT

Alexandra Battery: Building and Protecting Bermuda's Future.

Bermuda has an interesting relationship with history and weapons. Today, the island confronts gun violence. In the 1860s, we were building weapons of war. It is a strange paradox that weapons have dual purposes in society, regardless of how any community feels about war and its various outcomes. In this edition, we will look at Alexandra Battery.

Before there were wars, there was survival. The beach located at Alexandra Battery is the location where Bermuda's future would start. After the shipwreck, the survivors led by Sir George Somers, our town's namesake, constructed two new, smaller ships: the Patience and the Deliverance. Using salvaged materials and local cedar, the successful construction of two seaworthy vessels on the small beach in 1610 allowed the company to finally set sail for Jamestown, Virginia. Setting forth from Building Bay Beach, this effort was the foundational inspiration for William Shakespeare’s 1611 play, The Tempest.

Alexandra Battery, originally constructed in the 1860s and known as the Buildings Bay Battery, was renamed Alexandra Battery in 1876 after Princess Alexandra. This fortification was a crucial part of the British defense network protecting the Narrows Channel between Fort Cunningham and Fort St. Catherine. The battery was significantly enhanced by 1869 to counter the new threat of iron-plated ships and rifled artillery, a major technological shift in warfare.

The ammunitions of the time were state of the art. Upgrades included installing five 9-inch Rifled Muzzle Loaders (RMLs) protected by iron shields, known as "Gibraltar Shields." This new design featured a deliberate lack of traditional rear defenses, a choice that foreshadowed future trends in fortification design. It continued to be adapted, housing more modern 6-inch Breech-Loading rifles in the early 1900s, demonstrating a consistent evolution with military technology. While the original cannon and RML gun positions can still be seen, an archaeological project in 1985 helped to uncover and restore parts of the battery, including a 9-inch RML gun now on exhibit at the National Museum of Bermuda.

This battery is an integral part of Bermuda's defense and plays a strategic role in Britain's national defense in the Atlantic as the gateway to one of the New World's oldest continuously inhabited English settlements, the Town of St. George, now recognized for its outstanding universal value to humanity as part of the global network of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Brings European Elegance to King's Square.

When Roberta Munden moved to Bermuda in 2022 after many years of visiting the island, she noticed a significant shift in the retail landscape. Beloved establishments like Trimingham's, Smith's, and Coopers had closed their doors, leaving a gap in the community.

Drawing on her extensive career in retail fashion and furniture, Munden saw an opportunity. Together with her business partner Jane Roberts, she launched Boho Couture, a boutique that would bring something fresh yet timeless to the island. Using trusted supplier connections in Canada, the duo began importing beautiful, high-quality, and affordable linens and clothing from Italy and Europe — offering elegant pieces that complement Bermuda's island lifestyle.

Since opening in May 2024, Boho Couture has quickly become a vibrant addition to St. George's retail community. Specializing in linen apparel, quality clothing, and stylish accessories from Italy and Europe, each collection is carefully curated to bring a touch of European sophistication to the heart of the old town.

The response from both locals and visitors has been overwhelmingly positive.
Beyond retail, Munden and Roberts are passionate about giving back. They actively promote St. George's and Bermuda through social media, participate in local events including Cup Match and the Bermuda National Trust Walkabout, and support community celebrations. Boho Couture also donates to local charities and helps those in need.
